Eye-Fi cards - can this workaround be done?
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:50:56 pm »

I'd like to try Eye-Fi but my camera takes CF and not SD cards.

So, would this work? Pop an Eye-Fi card into the SD slot on my laptop and shoot tethered to it, designating my SD slot as the receiving drive letter in Lightroom? Thanks.

Once you are shooting tethered, what is the point of a wireless card?

Because I'd like to use Shuttersnitch and view the shot on my iPad - laptop resolution isn't that great and it's more clunky than the iPad to view holding it in your hand.

You could try the CFMulti CompactFlash adapter. Info here:

http://www.synchrotech.com/products/media-adapters-compactflash_eye-fi_sdhc_mmc-01.html

Some people have mentioned compatability problems.

More on tethering iPad here:

I found this comment at ShutterSnitch's web page: "Any device capable of transfering JPEG images to an FTP server can talk to ShutterSnitch.". In theory, this opens the door to a software-only solution: shot tethered and use the laptop to send the files to the iPad; I would try to find an FTP client capable of syncing the Lightroom output to the ShutterSnitch input.

Just my two cents.

Thanks.

I'm a bit over my head here - only a half-assed techie, at best. I have a D- Link 1350 portable router and access point. Would this do what you suggest?

I was proposing an untested and theoric solution, by no means trivial to set up;
probably the cost of a Eye-Fi will not justify the headache...

@John

Wish I could too, but I'm using Sony a900. Love the camera, love the Zeiss glass, but lack of supported add-ons is the downside to not using Canon or Nikon. Ah well. Thanks.

My name is Ziv Gillat and I'm one of the Eye-Fi co-founders. Here are some relevant links to the discussion, as well as info on CF adapters:

Ziv - I'm in Canada and unfortunately Amazon will not ship this item here. Too bad, I was excited for a while. Thanks anyway.

Stay tuned. There will be others. Keep following that thread on our forums. I'm collecting feedback, and so far, everyone really likes it.

But I'm also sure that if you contacted DigiGear, the seller on Amazon, they will ship to you. It's a good company.

Thx --
