Suggested paper for printing posters?
« on: January 25, 2011, 04:20:52 pm »

I've got a client who's interested in having some posters printed 24x36" on my Canon ipf8300. My standard fine art paper choices are way overkill for a job like this, both in terms of quality and cost. Right now I'm leaning towards the simple and inexpensive Canon Heavyweight Matte Coated Paper. Randy @ SOP also suggested Premium Bright White Gloss at discontinued paper pricing.

Anyone have any favourites here?

Thanks!

Neile, no opinion here, sorry. Not to hijack your thread, but I know you like the Moab Somerset Museum Rag, how does it compare to the Canson Rag Photographique 310?

Unfortunately that's one of the papers I've never had a chance to try :(

The inkjet paper listhttp://www.danecreekfolios.com/inkjet-paper-list/ doesn't lie. It's not in there, so I haven't tried it!

Neile, I have found Ilfords Smooth Pearl to be a really good low cost alternative for clients who want posters. Its relatively cheap - at least compared to my favourite paper Moab Somerset Museum Rag and the Canon printers really seem to gel well with it.

I really like the canon polypropylene film (think it's called durable banner).  It's tough, doesn't buckle, and flattens easily.  Even lasts for a while outdoors without laminating it.

Thanks A. I'm not sure if that's quite right for this application however. Think "poster of New Kids on the Block my teenager would hang on her wall" style poster :)

Ahh.  I was thinking more like crappy college band show posters.   :)

If you want a wonderfully bad paper try HP Bond.
It's a small fraction of the cost of your normal printing papers. It has so much optical brighteners that it glows in black light (UV emission only).
Definitely for ephemeral art.
Cheers,

Wow, how timely, I need to ask the very same question!  I'm flipping through Canon's print media booklet and its so hard to tell what is going to give a high-quality appearance yet not fine art quality.  The "Universal Glossy Paper" is 245gsm and seems pretty durable, has a nice poster-like finish, but no idea how it actually prints!  Anyone try it?  Also, I'm doing calculations on ink usage to figure out what my cost is per poster...what are you guys finding your cost per square foot is for ink on the 8300?

I went with Canon Satin Photographic 190gsm for the paper. Slight sheen, not too heavy, and more importantly it's cheap.

I don't do cost/sq foot for the 8300 because the printer gives such detailed ml results in the accounting too. I take the actual ml ink usage, multiply by my cost per ml of ink (which the tool does too :) and then apply my markup.
