Canon Mirror Lockup — A Useful Advice?
« on: January 25, 2011, 04:19:29 pm »

I've come across this on the web, when NOT to use mirror lockup:

Sounds pretty reasonable to me. Any objections?

for bracketing liveview is certainly the way to go.  in fact i can't think of any situation when mirror lockup would be superior to liveview.

With liveview, sensor is turned on/powered up which can heat it up and lead to more noise:

"One of the dirty little secrets of Live View is that it makes the sensor hot, and heat is the enemy of sensor noise."   http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/canon-40D-handson.shtml

Having said that I use Live View all the time as it is available at the press of the "set" button on my 40D.  I cannot say when the last time I used MLU was

I think mirror lockup wins out in all appropriate situations with my 5D. Has no liveview.
OK, so it's an antique. :(

Depends on the model.  My 40d behaves as described.  But the xxxD/Rebels don't (at least the 450d I had didn't).  Set auto-bracketing, 2-second self-timer and live view, then press the shutter and watch the viewfinder.  You'll see the mirror drop for each shot.  Makes no sense to me, but that's what happened.  Perhaps has to do with the servo or whatever that operates the mirror and shutter - it's obviously different on the xxxDs than on everything else.

The test has been done. Silent-mode Live view won hands down over traditional MLU. So, just turn on LV right before the real capture.

I note that Michael has gone the no/alternative mirror way with the GH2 and A55 cameras. Just avoid the problem in the first place.
