Baz,
The red-eye reduction lamp is also the AF assist illuminator "enables the camera to focus even when the subject is poorly lit", so says the manual. If you have the manual you will find this info on page 72.
I'll quote some more just in case you don't have it.
"To use the illuminator, AF-S must be selected for Custom Setting 2 ....., an AF-Nikkor lens must be attached, and the center focus area must be selected or closest subject priority in effect. If these conditions are met and the subject is poorly lit, the illuminator will light automatically to assist the autofocus operation when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway."
To turn this function off go to Custom Menu, option no. 4.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help. The D70s is an amazing piece of equipment for the money. Exposure in different lighting situations is much easier than the D100. The D100 and the SB80DX combination made for some very poor results. The pop up flash on the D70s is great. I'll look into the SB800.

I've just started using the D70s and am very impressed with the camera having been using the D100 for the past almost 2 years. Does anyone know how to turn off the red eye reduction light, it comes on in dark conditions even though I have not popped up the flash.
I realise it isn't meant for the professional but the D2x is out of my price range at the moment.I'm dissapointed the hot shoe does'nt take my SB80dx flash why they did that I don't know.

Hmmm.  The flash won't fit at all?  The new creative lighting system is outstanding, you'll probably want, at least, one new SB-800 to take advantage of it.

Lot's of people are making money using the D70, myself included, so don't feel that you don't have a great camera, because the D70 has served me well for the last year and a few months.
