Time for that new camera push to shoot more? Could it be?
« on: January 11, 2011, 04:02:42 pm »

For years (film days) I used Nikons for my 35 mm gear.  Four or so years ago I switched to Canon and now use 1DS Mark III.  Love the 1DS Mark III but for walking around I use a D5. The Studio stuff is shot with a PhaseOne that never goes off monopod.  The D5 body is not as robust as the Mark III but the files are great and the screen is bigger. So the Mark III’s are on ebay. I could get another D5 body.  Or...... Should I think about going back to Nikon? A 1Ds Mark IV seems a long way off. The D3X looks like a great camera too. It’s temping to change again.

It’s not so much the megapixels I’m after. I want fast operating, great auto focus, and easy auto bracket for HD shooting. Video would be nice. I use it on the D5 from time to time with a good mike (the kids concerts are more than passable). No video at work for me. I'm shoddy at finalcut.

Some questions.

Is the Nikon D3X Video quality comparable to that of the Canon?

Are there other bands I might even consider. M9??(so much for fast and auto focus)

Has any one used both. Should I get one of each?

I would be the first to say that it’s not the equipment. But I like all this stuff and why not.

D3X has no video capability. You might be referring to D3S?

A quick google gave me these links:
http://www.nikon-d800.net/2009/12/nikon-d3s-video-vs-canon-5d-mk-ii.html
http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon_EOS_5D_Mark_II-vs-Nikon_D3S

Of course this is just a start...

For Video - the new Panasonic AG-AF100 (http://www.dpreview.com/news/1004/10041203panasonicagaf100.asp) looks great on paper...of course, someone here on the forums may as well already be using it...

Of course, you can get one of each like you say and try it out :)

Thanks. So no video for now on the top models. Wonder if either in future will have it. Perhaps it takes away color depth? Hymm..

Oh I don't know if the D3S couldn't be described as a top model. At $5000+, it's certainly up there! I get the impression video on Nikon is a little behind Canon although the resolution on the new D7000 is up there (1080p) I don't think it's quite as "pro" or flexible a motion camera as Canon's offerings.

I would bet on the Nikon D4 and the Canon 1DsIV having video positively.  And no, it shouldn't take away any color depth that I'm aware of.
