Unable to print on canvas
« on: January 08, 2011, 01:26:58 am »

Ok I had made several prints in canvas with my Epson R1900, now all of the sudden I get paper jam galore! I even tried the single sheet tray, all the way to right and I still get a paper jam light. Changed to Matte paper and it printed fine! I read that you could tape de soft canvas to a more sturdy carboard piece but you have to make ther image bigger to offset the other paper...too complicated. Any suggestions?

Did you clean the rubber roller with alcohol? that may help too.

Yes,learn how to do it. It is not complicated at all.
Tape a heavy paper (Like Exhibition Fibre) to the back leading edge of your canvas. (Not cardboard) Just tape the leaderboard to the backside of your canvas with an inch of leader past the canvas edge. Your printer should now take the leader with ease. You do not have to make your image bigger. You just set the new paper size 1" longer in page setup, papersize, manage custom size. Set your borders so the printer starts printing 1" in on the canvas and you should be good to go.
This is how I used to do it on the 3800 and should work on the 1900 as well. Remember these smaller printers were not manufactured with canvas printing in mind. So it is well worth the 5 minutes to make it work. Google it and you will find more info.

Thank you I got this suggestion from another forum, to take a piece of matte paper a run some lines with alcohol and run it a few times. I think he meant horizontal lines?

Great!! So I take the thicker paper but to tape it , do I use double tape? Some Elmers glue? Sorry for the simle question but nothing can go on the canvas, I am printing at 13x19 so there is no room to tape it on a bigger backing paper. I get the 1 inch leading margin but I am trying to figure out the taping of the canvas.
I need to look at my printer to see the settings on the margins :) I will clean the rollers first since I printed before but someone said in another forum that after a while the Epson rollers gert dirty and that is it!

Thanks for your help.

You tape it to the back. Double sided tape is good. It can be almost any length but 4 to 6" is good. You only have 1" sticking past the canvas at the bottom. It just is a good solid leader for your rollers to grab. Set your paper size to 13 x 20" (1" extra for that leader sticking out. Now the only other thing you want to set is the border. You want a 1" border where you start to print so you are printing on canvas and not leader. Double check your borders before you print on your canvas. It usually is the opposite of what you think. (Top -bottom) Just run a sample of another cheaper paper for setup.

My method : with NO paper in the printer, just take a paper towel or two with alcohol, locate the rubber roller that grabs the paper at the back on the printer, apply the towel on it, hit the "page feed" button and make sure the towel doesn't go into the printer.
