Spectraview II when only using an RGB color space?
« on: December 26, 2010, 07:17:45 pm »

Hello! What are the problems, if any, when using high-gamut monitors when the output will only be in the standard RGB color space?

Thank you!

I don't see why there would be any problems. You would just be using part of the monitor's capability. Sort of like playing a low fidelity recording on a high-end stereo.

No problems..  But hey, you want problems.. we'll give you problems..  ;D ;D

Try using a monitor without an sRGB emulation mode in sRGB and you'll have problems.

The Spectraview monitors 'clamp down' on the sRGB gamut in sRGB Emulation mode helping prevent stray casts outside the gamut and this really makes a difference.  The benefits of the Spectraview monitors are far more reaching than which gamut it happens to be covering at the time.

Ok, thank you guys.

There appears to be several different versions of Spectraview.

http://www.ats-systems.com/store/detail_us.asp?PRODUCT_ID=43078V
PA241W-BK-SV
( $1,204.95)

http://www.projectorsuperstore.com/product_details.cfm?productid=5316&aid=GoogleRSS
LCD2490W2-BK-SV
( $1149.00 )

The price difference is negligible but the model differences concern me.

And, out of curiosity, why would something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/NEC-LCD2490WUXi2-BK-WIDESREEN-MONITOR-INCH/dp/B002C9KAO8/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1293425309&sr=8-8
( LCD2490WUXi2-BK )

be only $700? Is it absent the calibrating puck and software?

Thank you!

Pretty sure the LCD2490 is sRBG only.  The PA241 is wide gamut with sRGB emulation.

NEC says that the 2490's updated model is the PA241 w/ now has a 14 bit LUT panel with an even WIDER gamut, plus one more usb port. Smaller footprint...etc.

If you are going for the PA241, check B & H Photo.  They have a good price on that unit right now.  Also, it appears that it is cheaper at B and H to purchase the monitor and calibrating system separately.
