Hi Bradley,

Iceberg season is usually in May. Unfortunately they have been scarce over the last few years. Hopefully they will return like they use to in the 90's like this one here http://www.briancareyphotography.com/Newfoundland/Around-the-Island/12171229_gJW2Q#1065246030_sFjxC

Amazing!  Great shot Brian.  Actually I enjoyed all the pictures on your site.

Do you still have all that snow in May??  That's later than I expected.

It is definitely too bad about the ice--a sign of the times, I guess...

Hey Brad thanks for the comment. I had a look at your site also, great work. It's hard to call the winters here on the Avalon, some years we have little or no snow and sometimes we can have several major storms. What is usual is that whether or not we have snow we always have rain over the winter. The best place to see icebergs here is around Twillingate, on the northeast coast of the island: http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=Twillingate&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Twillingate,+NL&gl=ca&ei=UtYRTZqCD4P78Aaemvi7Dg&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBsQ8gEwAA

Happy Holidays

Hey Brad I should also add there were a few icebergs at Twilliingate last year and two years ago a few made it to the Avalon. A couple of years ago we had three guys come up to the northern Peninsula from Pittsburgh to climb some icebergs, now that would have been one great photo op!

And about our weather, we are going to have a green Xmas this year. Or weather is so temperamental, hard to believe we are at the same latitude as Seattle, 47 north.

All the Best,
Brian

Great work Brian, you've got some awesome images on your site..I fell in love with Newfoundland about five years ago when I took my kids on an iceberg hunt and have been summering there since. The change of seasons must be a beautiful thing to see and I'd love to spend more time there, especially down your way.  I will be on Fogo Island from mid-May through August (icebergs are big on my wish-list), so if you're in the area I will be based in the Town of Tilting....

Brad.... Statistically icebergs will peak in mid-May through mid-June in the Twillingate and neighbouring Fogo Island (Iceberg Alley) and there have been some great icebergs through early July in 2007-09. This year was a strange one since there was no pack ice or icebergs in the area and I only saw one way off. Even the tip of the Northern Peninsula was not very good this year. There were however icebergs grounded just offshore in Battle Harbour in Labrador as late as this July 10th when I talked to them.
Here is a link to the Canadian Ice Service which maps and tracks the icebergs. A word of warning though.. The numbers looked phenomenal this year but due to a persistent low pressure area in May and open water almost all the ice broke up and melted or was pushed West by the weather.
Another useful link would be Iceberg Finder.
If Icebergs are what you're after and you get up into Labrador one of the best places to go would be Battle Harbour. There is also a Ferry that sails up the Labrador Coast to Nain that takes about a week for a return voyage but I haven't taken that one yet.
Season's Greetings To All...
Take Care
Blair

Thanks Blair. Great to see you come to Newfoundland each summer! I had a look at your website and I will pass on to others that might be interested in your photo workshops. Your sure in a great area to catch rural Newfoundland and icebergs. I'm hoping to organize some workshops myself here on the Avalon, hope to begin this spring. Thanks for the invite and likewise if your ever in my area and would like to get together with the cameras I'll be happy to show you around.

Regards
Brian

Fantastic information, guys, thank you!

Haha--awesome, Brian!!  I've always wanted to kayak out to one of those monsters (dangerous, I know), but I'd not heard of anyone ice climbing them--that is awesome!!!  :)

The rest of my family is *south* of us, in Toronto, :)  and have been enjoying some nice -15's and -20's recently.  Here it's definitely going to be a green Christmas too.

Blair, thank you for the links!  I'll keep an eye out this spring, as I have wanted to get over to NFLD for years now.

Many thanks,
