I second Rob's comment on this image.  I'm continually surprised by Michael's image captures on his journey south.

And I'm equally surprised by the apparent lack of general interest we members seem to exhibit in them. How is it that we wax eloquent about quite a lot of nada on the 'critique' pages but habitually ignore really good stuff here in this section? The mind boggles.

Perhaps respect for Michael's abilities as well as what he has done with this site ?

... and the images are pretty darn good  ;)  !

And since we're a bunch of complainers. you probably won't hear much from us unless Michael posts a shot that is distinctly below his usual high standards.

I think part of Michael's secret is that he photographs scenes that he finds really interesting and doesn't worry about whether we'll like them or not. He still knows how to enjoy his photography, and it shows.

Fred,
Yes! You helped define why this image stunned me.  Sure it's got great balance, color, depth...  But most of all it made me want to be there, to share in the joy Michael must have been having when he created that shot.

I subscribe to the idea that a big part of what makes a great photograph is the "be there" part. Not as in "f/8 and be there," but as in "I want to be there." From the viewer's perspective.  For me that comes across in this image just as you have described.

Because you respect somebody you won't congratulate them on a work well done?

Weird!

Too true. We often take our friends abilities for granted. But we shouldn't.

Rather i look to it for suggestions to improve my own, hold it up as a sort of grail if you will, be inspired by it.  Michael's and others' images on this site are way beyond my skills. My congratulations would have little meaning, my critique even less.

Happy Holidays to all,

I don't suppose that any of the above posters will be getting banned in the future after all of that grovelling? :) ;) ;D
