Premier/Innova vs Epson/Hahnemuhle
« on: December 12, 2010, 04:03:53 pm »

I've been testing these papers.
They all seem fine. They all have nice textures and aesthetic look

The Premiers and Innovas are 1/2 price the last two, so just curious if others have tested/ used all 4 and found a real need to spend double?

I've been using these brands for many years, except Premier, but they all have a huge range of types.
Do you really mean all? That must be around 35-40 different papertypes?

Sven, ok so if Innova, for example makes paper that are great, why spend double for Epson for Hahnewmuhle is my question.

I think the picture is a bit more complicated. Check several qualities of Premier on where the whitening agents (FBA and normal whiteners) are applied. In general they get their paper white from the coating. Moab, Hahnemühle, Canson, have them applied throughout coating and paper base and possibly the paper base has a higher quality fiber too. It isn't like that on all paper qualities, there are exceptions. Right now papers produced in the US have a price advantage. There is the question of consistency of paper batches. The image quality depends on the quality of coatings. It is difficult to base a judgement of paper manufacturers on personal experience as it will always be a limited experience but in time you do experience differences in quality.

Sorry, but I don't understand your conclusion.
A quick glance on two typical favourite paper types from Epson and their equivalents from Innova:
44"x50' rolls, (prices from Shadesofpaper)
Epson HotPressNat $252
Innova Smooth Cotton $269
Epson Exhibition  $310
Innova Ultrasmooth Gloss $296

Three comparable qualities:

Moab Entrada Rag Natural 290 gsm, 13 Euro per square meter
Canson Rag Photographique 310 gsm, 28.5 Euro per square meter
Museo Portfolio Rag 300 gsm, 17 Euro per square meter

UK online shops, price including VAT.

No, especially when Innova Fibaprint UltraSmooth Gloss IS Epson Exhibition Fiber.
The base may have a minor weight difference, but basically IFA49 = EEF,  for all purposes.
Save your money, if thats the material you like.

Here in the Netherlands Innova and Hahnemuhle (and the other major players) are on par pricingwise (for similar base, weight and surface).
