what lens for a canon 10d?
« on: June 22, 2004, 10:43:35 pm »

Kinda depends  on how much  of  a perfectionist  you are.  If  you are a sharpaholic and like good  contrast  and color  you cannot go  wrong  with the 50mm 1.4 USM.  Not  expensive  and one  of  the,  if not THE sharpest lens available for Canon cameras.

But if you shoot a lot of varrying subjects at quickly varrying distances then the  zoom might  outweigh  other considerations.

You have  to really think hard about  what your needs are.

All true.

I own all the aformentioned  lenses and a 10D. In order of usage...

1) 17-40, probably used 40% of the time
2) 100 macro, probably used 25%
3) 70-200, probably used 25%
4) 50 mm, probably used 10%
5) 28-135, idle at home, but I keep it in case I ever do another walk-around session.

I tend to shoot with a kit of lenses in my bag and use a tripod. That makes the 28-135 less needed. But thats the lens I started with. I found myself want wider, longer, and sharper. But, the IS works like a charm for walk-around service.

Hi I am looking at buy a Canon 10D as my first digital SLR camera, but I am unsure what is the best general purpose lens to get for starters. I thought a 28mm-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom would be good. can anyone point me in the right direction.

Hi!
It depends on the kind of photography you want to do, i.e. are you into sports or landscapes? Remember that the 10D has a smaller sensor, so you need to multiply focal length by 1.6 to find the equivalent focal length in 35mm terms, for example: the 28-135 x 1.6 = 45-216mm equiv. For a walkabout lens I use Canon's 17-40 (equiv. 27-64mm). The 50/1.4 mentioned above is a very sharp lens, great for portraits as it's a 80mm on the 10D.

28-135IS is a great starter.  If I could only have one lens, that would be it.  If you are like me you will also want a wideangle.  The 17-40 is very nice (should be for the $$).
