Hope Valley Mist - into the sun at midday
« on: December 07, 2010, 08:29:09 am »

Hi all,

Here is a shot I took just a couple of days ago at midday. It was taken directly into the sun with a 200mm lens using the lens hood, I was sure it would flare badly, but oddly enough it didn't. It was very cold and the sun was blazing just above the top edge of the picture frame, but I thought what the heck, I'm here, my kit is set up, I am going to fire off a few shots anyway.

Please let me know what you think.

Well

You can't really go wrong with a mist shot. Especially a backlit mist shot. And it is very nice, almost monochromatic. The receding planes are excellent. Funnily enough, though, despite being shot straight into the sun, there isn't very much luminosity in it - it doesn't really glow like you might hope. Perhaps a little more fine-tuning with levels and internal contrast might help. But then again, that might mess up the delicay of the tonal transitions.

I think this is a more successful photo than the first you posted here. I like especially the tone on tone blending of the fog(is it fog? It looks like fog to me) across the landscape.

Very nice.
I think both John's and Pup's comments are spot on.

The lower half (or even just the lower third) looks much better than the whole picture, in my humble opinion.

It's a a great concept. Good composition and mood. However, its a bit too "thin" and a moderate increase in density would
give the image more impact without diluting the mood.
