Sources for Solux compatible desk/task lamps
« on: November 21, 2010, 02:52:05 am »

I've looking to upgrade my print matching lighting to Solux but the lamps are so crazy expensive from Solux. The only other source I've found is from Pegasus Associates who have a clamp on light for $70. Does anyone here know of another source for an inexpensive Solux task lamp? Google searches reveal tons of bulbs but few fixtures.

Thanks!

Competitive Edgeo sells the Wiko/Eiko lamps, $50 US for the clip-on. Apart from that any MR16 GU5.3 fixture will work, however I haven't seen any good cheap ones that could match the clip-on lamp so I just got that instead.

The only place I’ve ever been able to order Solux bulbs is direct from Solux.

Thanks guys- I should specify that I'm looking for MR16 GU5.3 fixtures that are free standing as I am unable to install permanent fixtures at this location. Thanks again!

There are several outlets for exhibition lighting which offer Solux compatible fixtures.

The Solux bulbs use standard MR16 sockets. I use an inexpensive track light from the Home Depot for work with Imatest. See Norman Koren's Imatest site. I did replace the diffusers with ones I bought from Solux as Norman recommends.

Bill is correct.  The solux MR 16 bulbs fit in any fixture that holds MR 16 bulbs.  Nothing special is needed.   Any track light or other desk type light that holds MR16 bulbs will work perfectly with the solux MR16's.  I installed the MR16's into an old MR16 track light system that I had.  AOK

You do need to be a bit careful with the fixture because the light emitted from the back of the Solux bulb is quite different from the nice "daylight" from the front. If the fixture reflects this light forwards there is a noticeable difference in the quality of the light, hence the "Black Back" bulbs.

A word of caution though. Usually, at least here in The Netherlands, any lamps for this type of bulb, although it says 12 volt, is not 12 volt, but in most cases 11.5volt. Thus not achieving the light temeprature in kelvin. You an see the specsheet at solux for what the consequences are. I do not know if the solux provided lamps are indeed 12volt, simply because they are not purchaseable here in The Netherlands. Note: the bulbs themselves are.
By the way the diffusors are also not purchaseable here in Europe.

I'm using a 'home-made' fitting which is the internal socket from a ceiling fitting bolted to an aluminium angle with the Solux lamp plugged into the socket and using a standard 12V AC light transformer.  The bulb was sourced from a digital photo specialist in Melbourne, Oz, called Imagescience (http://www.imagescience.com.au).  Expensive given the European cost of the bulbs but local and quick.  Otherwise I seem to think the bulbs are available direct from Solux via the web.

Created my own using a fitting for a 12V track light that is designed to mount to ceiling box (standard home electric stuff), a 12V track light that mounts in the first bit, a piece of aluminum angle iron (for the upright), a cheap lamp cord, and a clamp. Less adjustable (that could be achieved with minimal work). Cost about $30. Probably do cheaper, but shopped at high end lighting store (big box don't carry 12 volt track lighting any longer).

Can send details and picture if anyone interested - pm me.
