Hi everyone,

I've been using my Canon 9500 MK I for a few years now and really love it. Recently I found my sweet spot with Canson Platine Fiber Rag and a custom profile made with the Spyder 3 Print colorimeter.

Having just installed the XPS print driver, what is the forum's opinion on the need to re-profile? As I understand it, the XPS driver should theoretically allow for 16bit instead of 8bit printing (smoother tone transitions?), but does this effect the output colors?

It'd be fantastic if there is no need to print another 4-7 pages to re-profile. However, I have a suspicion 16bit not only opens up finer tonal transition, but better color "mixing" i.e. different color results to profile.

Thanks for the help,

Alex

You're not going to get 16-bit printing just by installing the XPS print drivers. The applications you print from would have to support the XPS printing path to take advantage of its new features, and AFAIK none of the graphics/photo applications support XPS. Otherwise all you get from the XPS driver is the 8-bit legacy GDI emulation, which may or may not be identical to the actual GDI driver; so it's uncertain whether you would need to re-profile or not. Unless you have applications that you know support/need the XPS path, you might be better off just sticking with the GDI driver so you don't have to worry about if your profiles are still valid.
