The Point Loma lighthouse is nice, and if you put your back to San Diego, no city.  I guess my feelings are if you are going to the city, shoot the city.

A great SD city scape location is directly across from the city on Coronado.  The entire skyline is available along with coffee in the smallish shopping area.

A great place to eat is in Little Italy at Fillipi's.  It is behind the grocery store, but has red sauce stuff that is oh so good and not too expensive.  The atmosphere is red and white table clothes and you can see the kithcen, if you look up from your plate.  Free parking, a plus in SD.

Croce's has good jazz and fair food.

I have noticed that mapquest's mph is usually high compared to my times.  No time to refuel or eat.  Just drive at the limit.  And if you stop for a photo, well, YMMV.

Ooops, I've been using mapblast.  Your Mph may very Vary.

One great spot for sunsets used to be along the road that goes from the USCD campus down to La Jolla, the road that passes by Scripts.  (Help me out with the name.)  Just drive down slowly and scout a spot on the sidewalk.

The SD Zoo is excellent.  And the Wild Animal Park (got the name right?) is one of the best places to get shots of animals in more natural habitats.  (At least it was.)

If the sea is up a bit you can get good wave shots at La Jolla Cove.

(Tide pools at LJ Cove?)

If you want to shoot sailboats then there are lots of good places along the north shore of SD Bay.  Easy to work that in with Point Loma, lighthouse and military cemetery.

And there's Hotel Coronado on the Silver Strand.

Star of India still moored there?  If so, very interesting steel-hulled sailing ship.  If you're lucky when you're aboard the pistol shrimp will be courting.

Good night shots from the top of Mt. Soledad?  Used to be able to see the lights all the way into Mexico from there.  Especially good on fireworks nights.

BTW, in the summer there (used to be) are evening concerts at Mission Bay.  At the end of the concert there are/were fireworks.  Right after those fireworks were over Sea World would set off a bunch.

(I mored my boat in Mission Bay during the summer of 1989.  Used to sit in the cockpit, watch the MB fireworks.  Get up, walk to the bow, and watch Sea World shoot their stuff.)

(Folks with current info are free to clean up my post.)

Actually the San Blas are a group of 300 - 400 islands off the coast of Panama on the Caribbean side.  On the SA side of the Canal.

Cuna Indians live on the islands, make their income from coconuts, fishing, and selling molas - colorful fabric work to cruise ships and the occasional sail boat.

Wonderful place, spent about three months there some years back.

And if my lenses hadn't died from fungus I would have gotten some great shots.

There's also at least one San Blas in Mexico.  Somewhere around Veracruz I believe.

framah, like I said, there's much more to life than making images and being really slim.  Places to eat, stay and see that are not really photo ops are really good (maybe literally).

I have a couple of books on "road food."  They list places, usually within a few miles of an Interstate highway.  I try them for myself when all else fails.  It really is hard to beat a good grocery store and kitchen in my van, but sometimes I don't want to cook, (even more often), clean up.  So it is road food.

It is sometimes hard to seperate the food from the event, much like photos.  When I'm on a road trip with my wife or sons, well, sometimes I think the food may taste just a little bit better than if I were just hungry.  Maybe one of the best meals I have ever had was a trout I caught, and my mother cooked for my dad, herself and me.  I caught the fish while in Ontario and it was raining and ice was forming on the end of my rod.  I was so sure I would not catch anything I didn't even have a net.

It might be very useful for international photogrpahers or those from another area.  I know when I go to Europe, I would really appreciate some local knowledge about eateries and such.  I like the off the beaten path places.  Soem local treid and true help would be useful.

I'm heading out to San Diego for a friends wedding the first week of June and would like to know about places around the area I can go to get some good shots but not in the city. I suppose I could go to the zoo but I 'm looking more for scenics and stuff. I'll have a rental car so a couple hour drive would be possible. Thanks for any ideas.

Some suggestions:

For a full-day trip, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, in the eastern part of the county, is a favorite spot for photographers (desert, mountains, badlands, ocotillo cactus in plenty, bighorn sheep)...

If you like wildlife but the zoo sounds too tame (though it's about as good as zoos get), there's the Wild Animal Park (run by the zoo) in north-central S.D. county, which has huge enclosures with entire herds of animals wandering about.

Torrey Pines State Park, just north of La Jolla (twisted pine trees on scenic eroded bluffs overlooking the ocean)...
And since BlasR is teasing me about it  ::  , central S.D. to La Jolla is more like 20 minutes (he must drive reallllly fast).

Check mapquest.com.  You'll find that the driving times I've given match theirs pretty well.

Thanks everyone for the info as well as the enjoyable asides. It seems that the wedding is in Del Mar which is above SD., but a really short hop down to Torrey Pines. I can't afford the cost of the hotel rooms where the wedding is being held (L'Auberge Del Mar - $400/nite!!!) so I think I have found a place on the water with a little porch on each room looking to the ocean for $150/nite.  Boy!! I remember when I found it hard to swallow spending $50/nite for a room!!
I figure if I'm going to be out there where it is sunny and warm (I live in Maine) I'm going to have to rent a convertible and drive with the top down and maybe a bright, flower print shirt! There'll be enough food and drink at the rehearsal dinner and the reception to more than make up for not heading to Fillipi's.

Thanks for that post Howard.

I was a grad student at UCSD in the very early '70s and Fillipi's was a favorite place to eat (not that I could afford it very often).

So exotic to walk into a Italian deli - first one I had ever seen.  And then the wonderful restaurant hidden behind the red and white checked curtain in the back....

I would have expected Fillipi's to be long gone.

Along with Fish House West and the casual 'look you in the eye and wish you a "Have a nice day"' that you got from almost everyone walking down the sidewalk.

A good place to park (hard to find) is between the Star of India and the Coast Guard station (toward the airport).  There are usually some places even in busy times.  It is an easy walk to the Star.

Another spot to eat is the Fish Market.  Just keep walking past the Star toward the Convention Center.  It is on the right.  The sour dough bread and butter is worth the walk.  I like the chiapino (spelling?).  Not dirt cheap but the sunset view across the Bay is great, and the fish is fresh.

The Gas Light area is fun and has some good evening street scene photo ops.  I like Croce's, especially if AJ is there.

In an Out Burger.  Best "fast food" burger around anywhere.  If you get up to San Clemente, try Biggies.  Th eKing Burger is fantastic.  It used to be a Fatburger.  Same burger.

Great photo spots...

Fillipi's for Italian deli, hanging salami shots - pizza coming out of the over door shots....

Tom Ham's Lighthouse (that place still there?) - panoramic shots of San Diego Bay....

Su Casa (another from my past) - closeups of people entering a state of bliss when the fork hits their mouth....

La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club Restaurant (my girlfriend worked there) - waves breaking against plate glass windows when the seas are up....
