10.6.5 Printing Warning
« on: November 12, 2010, 08:12:37 am »

Seems like a serious printing problem here. I have yet to have any direct experience as I am still in the process of formulating my backup strategy. With the problems I am hearing about 10.6.5 I will keep 10.6.4 on a live partition and put 10.6.5 on another, so no time gets lost going back to 10.6.4 if need be.

No problems here with a Epson 3880 and 9900. Assuming one knows how to go into the Printer Settings and select the correct paper size, Photoshop CS5 (12.0.1) and the most recent Epson drivers (for my two printers) are not showing this inability to print portrait images–meaning Photoshop CS5 when the orientation is correctly checked-prints landscape images without problem.

You'll note that with the exception of one person identifying their printer as an HP, nobody else seems to be mentioning what printer they have nor what driver nor exactly what printer page setup and driver settings are being used.

Considering that YOU haven't actually tested this is there a reason you are jumping around various forums yelling FIRE?

And a Fiery RIP, Lexmark.

Three forums and with a link to the Apple forum where it was originally posted.

Shall I have said nothing?? Is there some reason you did not want this mentioned??

Unless you personally have tested this and can confirm the issue is real, what you are doing is spreading rumors...I tested and can confirm the issue does NOT impact MY printers...

Sorry to hear that you have such a limited understanding of all the various printers and print flows that you consider real people with many different printers reporting these same problem, as rumors.

What YOU were reporting was second hand information which didn't help anybody solve any problems...as it stands, it seems to be a bug with the Cups Postscript print pipeline. So it's either up to Apple to fix it or print drivers to work around it. A more accurate statement would have been that SOME PEOPLE have had SOME issues with SOME printers after the 10.6.5 update.

Just as SOME PEOPLE have had SOME issues with SOME printers prior to the 10.6.5 update <g>

So far I have had no success printing landscape to  Fiery RIP driving a DocuColor 252. Did not matter if the paper was loaded LEF or SEF 8.5 x 11 or 11 x 17 which of course can only be loaded SEF. No combination of paper settings worked. This is in PSCS5 and 4.

In Indesign if set 8.5 x 11 LEF in IDCS4 that it printed portrait, but if I set 8.5 x 11 SEF even though the driver is set for 8.5 x 11 LEF then it printed landscape correctly. IN CS4 you need to choose 8.5 x 11 SEF but in CS5 you need to choose US Letter. Why there is different paper size options listed between CS4 and CS5 even though they are accessing the same PPD file is also strange. On 11 x 17 Landscape loaded in the printer as SEF of course I had no problem printing landscape with CS4 choosing 11 x 17 SEF or CS5 Tabloid. Again not the same paper choice available. No problem printing with Print Booklet 2 up 8.5 x 11 on 11 x 17.

Printing landscape to the Canon iPF9000 using Canon drivers does not appear to have any problems.

I might be a bit naive, but I like to try to imagine that writers of software try to help us do what we want, and try to avoid providing pitfalls... perhaps the user-interface could be more helpful?

When you are printing from one program through another, sometimes both programs want to control the output, and you have to have the right options selected in both programs to get it to work.

Can you tell both programs to rotate 90 degree and end up rotating 180 degrees?

Or you can do it yourself.

All you need to do is set the finder to show hidden files and folders. Then copy the  /usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstops file from 10.6.4 backup or partition to the 10.6.5 folder /usr/libexec/cups/filter and then repair permissions. It doesn't get much simpler than that. You might want to save the pstops file from 10.6.5 somewhere so that you can copy it back if you want.

Two things broken by 10.6.5
« Reply #12 on: November 15, 2010, 04:55:28 pm »

Printing with my new iPF8300 (32 bit CS5) no problem, however ImageNest RIP now falls over on startup

Several other parts of some software I'm testing have also fallen over, but that's beta software for you ;-)

Everything still works fine on my 10.6.4 laptop though, so not too serious

Will look into some of the suggestions posted here...

Printing with my new iPF8300 (32 bit CS5) no problem,

The new 64-bit plugin has been released for the iPFx300 series printers.

Hi

There is another thread running which is relevant to this subject

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?topic=48035.0

"Is Imageprint worth it….?

My opinion is a big yes reinforced by no problems on the latest Mac OS update running Imageprint 8.

Who needs to keep having these issues every time Apple upgrade their OS?  Not me!!

Nope - since getting the iPF8300, printing has worked just fine :-)
In fact I have a spare copy of ImagePrint since I got rid of my old Epson 9600
When I need layout functionality, ImageNest will work just fine (OK only on my laptop at the moment :-)  )
