USB2 cable computer to printer length
« on: November 09, 2010, 08:58:32 pm »

Newbie, with a new 3880, which is working wonderfully with a 10 foot cable, but I sure would like a longer one.
Are there any problems with a 15-16 foot one? Thanks!

I have 16 ft of USB on my 3800 with no issues. I seem to recall that 16' is as long as one should go on USB 2.0. Any techies out there?

You can chain up to five USB powered extension cables together, for a total length not over 15 metres (these are not the same as regular USB cables: they have a bus-powered repeater inside the female connector end).

Longer lengths are possible with an intermediate conversion to fibre optic cable, but this is much more expensive.

USB 1.0 length max is 3 meters and USB 2.0 is up to 15 meters; both without a repeater.

Using hubs, up to 30 meters and using a Cat-5 extender, up to 50 feet.

This is the official norm... and then comes the problem of compatibilty with that hardware.
I know firsthand that my ADSL modem worked fine on USB2 with a 2m cable, but wasn't seen at all with a 5m (15ft) cable ; I discovered it was a known peculiarity of it and switched to RJ45 connection, which is a treat for long cable lengths (up to 50m at least IIRC).

USB 2.0 is 5 metres maximum for high speed devices, unless low speed equipment and/or low resistance cable is used. The latter option works, I have a 10 metre USB 2.0 cable with a repeater that seems to work fine on an active USB port.

Cheers,
