Has anyone been in this area?  This would be perfect time-wise for me: http://www.fs.fed.us/r3....c.shtml

I would certainly second the Sedona idea. It's hard to go wrong there. I don't know anything spectacular right in and around Flagstaff but there are many things within about an hour's drive. If I recall, Grand Canyon isn't much more than an hour. You can also drive up to Page, then west toward Kanab.

I would suggest getting the book by Laurent Martres, Photographing the Southwest. He has one volume that covers AZ and NM and another that covers southern Utah and Colorado. It has a number of nice hikes and drives that would be great even for the non-photographer.

Well, Sedona looked great - but unfortunately I will have to go BACK on my own for a day for the pics I really wanted   My dad decided to fart around all afternoon, taking us through every backroad and ghost town with an antique store on the way there...we got to Sedona with litterally 10 minutes of sunlight left.  I did get a couple shots I am happy with though, and it did convince me to return next fall for a longer stay.  Here's a tiny sample, these aren't very processed yet, I just threw them up as a sampler for some freinds to see:  Photo link

I will have a day to spend in Flagstaff in a couple weeks.  Where are some of the hot spots?

You can't go wrong anywhere in the Sedona area.  You've found a good web site there - I believe I used the same one before my Sedona trip a year or two ago, and it was a big help.  My favorite hike (for photography too) in that area was the trail up Boynton Canyon:

Definitely Airport Road in Sedona and the loop for sunrise and most definitely sunsets. Red Rock Crossing in the little park off the loop and short walk to the best shooting areas.

I very much enjoyed Sunset Crater and Wupatki near Flagstaff. there are great opportunities there for wonderful photography.

The little town of Jerome is a great day trip from Sedona as well.
It's a former mining town perched on top of a hill.

The drive from Sedona to the Grand Canyon on 89A is well worth taking.

At the Grand Canyon try not to miss Sunset View at the end of the canyon for sunset. it's spectacular. You can leave the canyon there and possibly take the road up to Page and Lake Powell and/or on to Kayenta and Monument Valley.

If you are more interested in Native American culture, I really enjoyed First and Second Mesa, the old towns of Walpi and Oraibi. It seems something totally outside of the United States. they are two of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the US. They are not difficult to get to from Flagstaff. This is Hopi country.
Canyon de Chelly is not too far from the two little towns as well. However you do need to spend the night or two nights at Canyon de Chelly because you need a guide and the Canyons are big.

Enjoy and email me if you need any more help.

I would throw my cameras away if I could spend one more day with my dad.
