Jigsaw puzzle blank supplier
« on: October 30, 2010, 05:09:14 pm »

Not to give anyone any competitive ideas, or anything, but I've seen strong interest in puzzles made from my stuff.  I've found a few outfits that will print larger sizes for me, but that makes the margins kinda small (30% or so) with retail running from $50 to $80 depending on size

So I'm thinking to print my own with an Epson 9800.

I've found suppliers for smaller blank puzzles but am not getting anywhere with larger sizes.

I'm looking for a supplier of jigsaw puzzle blanks in the 11x17 to 24x16 and 500-1000 piece range.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Interesting question.  I was thinking about how to cut a print into a puzzle without getting too carried away purchasing equipment.  I spent a few minutes searching for puzzle dies, but the only one's I could find in the 500-1000 piece variety come from China:  http://www.puzzlemakingmachine.com/standard.html  But I think if you could find the right die, you could probably generate enough pressure to cut through cardboard with either a laminator or an etching press (or obviously a die cutter, but those get expensive/heavy/big in the size you are looking for).  Not sure if you have a laminator (or know someone who does), but my suggestion would be to buy a cheap die, for example: http://www.dickblick.com/1/1/23992--allstar-die-cutter-machine-puzzle-1-die.html and see if it cuts through cardboard (or whatever you'd like to use as the puzzle material) when you pass it though the laminator.  If that works, it might be worth navigating the treacherous waters of international trade.  ;D

Thanks for the reply. Interesting idea, but it's beginning to look like I'll be farming out the printing, at least in the short term.

Walter,

I thought of your thread while I was in the Zion National Park gift shop today. They had tons of puzzles with photos of various Zion scenes. The company that produced them was http://www.impactphotographics.com/. Not sure if contacting them would be helpful, but they clearly knew how to do photographic puzzles.

That is very interesting!  Thanks. Too late today to call, but it's on the list for tomorrow.
