Have you tried using a zoom, so that you can include most of the subject?  or using two bodies with different angles of view?

The horse is under exposed, but has some detail.

The rider's face is underexposed, and partly obscured by his fist.
The close crop gives no context - was this in the stable yard or during a Game?

  Thanks for the comments, I think your right a slightly different crop may work better but I wanted the close in view to portray emotion of the moment.  I'll take a look at the processing for what exposure as I think it was lighter before I adjusted it.

There are no easy answers to framing/cropping... if you had included the whole of the polo pony's nose, it would have lead the eye out of the picture.

A higher view point might have enabled you to get more of the "emotion of the moment" by including some of the field/pitch and other riders/ponies.

A vertical crop, including the rider's foot, and cropping off the mallet-head might have been an option?
