2x200Gig OWC SSDs.... to RAID or not RAID those
« on: October 20, 2010, 03:45:14 pm »

I got my new 6Core MacPRo 24Gig RAM   and 2 OWC Extreme Prod RE 200Gig SSDs .
Very fast delivery from US to Sweden in about 26 hours ....

I'm bit reluctant to putting those into Raid 0 ( i want one boot and one scratch partition )
OTOH - I would do that if disk pereformance would increase more then 10 % ..
I know DigiLoyd would go for Raid ...
Any other suggestions ?

Hi,

You can create different partitions and use RAID 0 on each. Or use RAID 1 on two partitions and RAID 0 on other two.

With SSD there is no head movements involved so access time is virtually zero. That essentially means that using different partitions for system and swap is less important. RAID 0 will be faster than other options if your system really can support something like 500 MByte/s on dual channels of SATA.

On the other hand, it may not matter at all. It all depends on your applications.

RAID 1 is most safe
RAID 0 is fastest
RAID 5 is a sane combination but needs moor devices

Would I have dual SSD-s I would use them as RAID0.

Right now I have 2x2 TByte HDD. I use 50 MByte from each as RAID 0 stripe for scratch. This achieves about 250 MByte/s throughput, but access time is slow (around 5 ms??!). I hope to get get my single SSD from OWC tomorrow if Fedex can get they act together.

Best regards
Erik

Thanks Erik - I made a quick test .
( using Drive Genius benchmark tool )

My trusty old  MAcPro  8Core with Hitachi drive : approx 96MB /s
 New 6Core machine :

OWC 200 G SSd - non Raid -  approx 220 MB /s
2  SSDs  Raid 0 striped ( and partitioned )   - approx 400 MB/s

I'll go with stripe and a frequent backup :-)  I do understand that my speed gain will not be as large as those figures suggest .

One more raid question - for PS and LR work - is there any point  to fiddle with
( an option in Disk utility ) increased block size ?
( I left it on default size )
