Fantastic New Photography Competition
« on: October 19, 2010, 12:03:25 PM »

Hello,

I would really love to promote a fantastic new photography competition to you.
No entry fee - no selling - just a really good competition to showcase your skills!

http://leica.cazloyd.com/

You could be crowned the cazenove+loyd Leica Travel Photographer of the year 2011 and be the proud owner of a Leica X1 (as well as fantastic goodies every month)

Even if you dont want to enter - it would be good to hear some feedback :-)

Thank you

It is a mixed bag in that respect.

For winning images, terms appear to be relatively decent:

"... the right to use the winning images from the date of entry to 18 months after the closing date of the Competition and for no further consideration beyond that of the stated prizes. However, all such uses will credit the photographer, provided they give their agreement. (For the avoidance of doubt, copyright shall remain with the entrant)..."

However, it does turn to rights grab for all other entrants:

"...they grant to the Promoter and Leica the right to use other entered images from the date of entry to 12 months after the closing date of the Competition for no consideration. However, all such uses will credit the photographer provided they give their agreement. (As with winning images, copyright shall remain with the entrant)...."

Compared with many of the other competitions which have been discussed here, that's pretty modest: time-limited, credit given, no grab of copyright. There's no charge for entry, either.

The main problem is that photos must have been taken in specific regions, so that's rather limiting.

There are no credits given on the photos on the winners page. Surely name of the photographer should be next to the photos?

Well, it is not next to the photos, but on the photo... just need to place the mouse over it.

I'm not sure what you refer to. If I open an image page for February, for example, there is no popup, and the JPEG doesn't include copyright information.

The popup/tooltip doesn't work on my FF, but it's pretty tightly locked up (APB, Ghostery, NoScript). It doesn't work in Opera or Chrome, either. Safari is so in love with Mr Jobs's keynote it refuses to leave Apple home page so I'm not gonna bother more with it.

It appears that January is the only month where the competition is "currently in progress". Images in other months (and there is only one image per month) are quite possibly stock images, not competition entries.

Yep, taking a closer look I think that's it. The slide-overs show up in January gallery.

A happy coincidence is that January's competition is for Guatemala, and I'm going there in November. The Leica is practically mine :P

edit: Amberley, you might want to clarify your entry rules. Out of the 4 pages of photos in January competition, there is exactly one (1) picture taken in Guatemala. According to your rules

Quote
2. The Competition runs each calendar month from 00.01 on 1st January 2011 to 23.59 on 31st December 2011. All times are based on GMT. Entries made before the start date will be entered for January 2011.
(emphasis mine)

which says all entries submitted before January would be entered for the Guatemala (January) competition, thus disqualifying all non-Guatemalan entries. Not sure if that's the intention, and it's clearly confusing to the submitters.

Thank you all for taking a look - you can enter any photos from our three regions that we specialise in in any month. The region you are refering to e.g Guatemala for Jan - is just a tip about what to shoot where - just giving some people who do travel with us some inspiration. It is not meant to refer to the what you should enter for each month.

If this is confusing to anyone that doesnt already know cazenove+loyd I will look into getting this removed.

And feppe - I look forward to seeing your entries :-)

Also there are no winners yet (first winner will be chosen end of Jan) - but each months winners will indeed have their name on the roll over and when you click through to see the image in full.

Slobodan - yes all stock images from our collection - again just to give people some inspiration. Do you think this is confusing to the user?

Ok now I get it. It says "where you should be shooting" which implies that's the location expected for submissions, so it's a bit confusing. Such language might cause others who are confused to not submit photos for that month if they don't have pictures from the tipped location.

Also, instead of stock photos on upcoming months, it might make more sense to have a graphic saying "contest opening in February, 2011" for example. Not a big deal, though.
