No "Photo is in a Collection" Badge with Smart Collections?
« on: October 17, 2010, 05:24:18 am »

Hi Folks,
I have noticed that any of my pictures that are in 'Smart Collections' are not 'marked' with the "Photo is in a Collection" Badge. If the pictures are in a 'normal' collection, the little badge is present. Have I missed something or is there a reason for this badge being absent in Smart Collections?
Thanks for any help or insight
Stephen

Your observation is correct, smart collections are not shown when using "show in collection".
A smart collection is actualy a defined database query, which is automatically executed by the system at runtime, aka "dynamic".

For reasons unknown not yet resolved, already reported during lr 3 beta.

Apparently for Adobe this has a low priority to fix.
From what i observed in forums and from contacts with LR users, collections and even more smart collections are not that widely used.

I am surprised, smart collections and collections are great - one of the reasons for using LR. Enables you to gather together images for printing, uploading, processing etc with very little effort.

They're used a lot by those who approach LR as a tool for managing their work, but most of those who write about Lightroom are fluffy graphics types who've come from Photoshop and focus on adjustment of individual images rather than on DAM issues or how to work efficiently. Also, unlike Aperture, Lightroom offers both physical folders and virtual folders, so users aren't forced to use collections and many get by using folders.

Adobe haven't put as much effort into the feature as they might. I don't regard the lack of collection badges as a big deal though, and it would be well down my list of priorities for development time.

Wrt the image adjustment focus versus the DAM focus, so true.
The virtual (or logical) (not well grasped) versus the physical (so used to) is in my observations indeed a reason not to explore the benefits of virtual or logical groupings.
