How does the Canon 7D generate a video image?
« on: October 16, 2010, 07:29:19 pm »

I see that the Canon 7D has a pixel resolution of only 2.1 megapixels for 1080p Full HD mode, 0.9 megapixels in 720p HD mode, and just 0.3 megapixels in VGA mode.

Since the sensor is 18 MP, how does the sensor generate these lower resolution images?

The image on the rear LCD does not look smaller or more cropped than the image for a still photo.

When I shuttle back and forth between 1080p and 720p, the image size does not change.

There is a limited storage capacity for video that is in the center of the problem. Imagine that if the camera would film at its full resolution, it would be equivalent to shoot at least 24x 18MP images/seconds and also there is a heat issue. Many times I've had the warning in the middle but fortunatly it just warns and so far never cutted the filming, but indeed it's not very friendly.

But this is THE DREAM, when cameras will be able to produce printing resolution stills in movies with raw video, the all game in photography will change.

I'd really like to have Michael's thoughts on that topic. I got the impression that the surprise could come actually from the new generation of video cameras like the Panasonic and not specially from the dslr with video capabilities.
I'd like Michael to tell us his vision-intuition, what does he think about the path that is open and if we might expect this technology to be available (i mean also available financialy) in the next 5 years. For example a camcorder that would be capable of 16MP stills at printing resolution.

Indeed, if such a tech is putten on the market in some years, photography as we know it will be completly reformated.

Thank you for not answering my question.

Here's some discussion on the topic ...
