Detecting image blur from camera motion
« on: October 15, 2010, 05:15:19 pm »

Having bought myself a flash hot-shoe spirit level, I noticed something else: the smallest touch can leave the camera vibrating for a few seconds regardless of how well it is fixed into the tripod.

This, along with the camera shake warning light on compact cameras got me to thinking: why can't all cameras tell us when their acceleration and velocity will result in a blurred image?

And I suppose further to this, why isn't there something in LR or PS or your other favourite tool that can analyze a digital image and provide its verdict on whether a picture is blurred or not?

There was a recent message thread on that topic, including a link to a paper about one approach: Image Deblurring using Inertial Measurement Sensors.

There's also research into doing it without additional hardware; e.g., read the abstract for Blurred image restoration: A fast method of finding the motion length and angle.
