Slight Red Cast with NEC MultiSync 2690 WUXi with Spectraview
« on: October 14, 2010, 02:57:58 pm »

My new NEC MultiSync 2690 WUXi with Spectraview is giving a slight red cast. I compared the a grayscale chart with my NEC, and the Apple monitor.
The Apple monitor is neutral while the NEC gives a slight red cast. I shoot for a large university's publications department, and I also do their prepress. I noticed that I over corrected for the red after seeing the print color proofs--not too bad, but it bugs me. What am I doing wrong with the calibration? I turn off the fluorescent lights, but leave the door open. So there is a little ambient light, but not much.

Thanks,
Patrick Ray Dunn

Are you trying to get the screens to match one another? If so, how did you go about doing that (did you just enter the same white point into the profiling software on both platforms or did you measure the white point on one as a reference for the other)?

Cheers, Joe

You are probably never going to get a perfect visual match between the two different display types using the same Target white point settings. If you want to keep the Apple as your reference, then perform a "visual match" and create a new Target specifically for the LCD2690. Details on how to do this are on the FAQ page in the User's Guide.

Is spectraview going to get updated? The current version has some weird things such as using native gamut instead of of sRGB for Broadcast video calibrations.

Next version due out in a couple of weeks will allow you to set the color gamut on PA series displays. Broadcast Video will use SMPTE-C but you can modify to anything you want.

Any chance it (or some future version) will support basICColor DISCUS?

Just an FYI for folks - the new version is available now which allows custom gamut settings.

good to know but a link would have been nice.  I find the NEC website really difficult to find things unless you know precisely where something is (too many levels to drill down) and the Spectraview website just has nothing on it (and that's the obvious place to start), a forum where the last posted note was in the middle of 2009 - not a good look to persuade potential customers you have a leading edge product...

We've had the red cast for quite some time so was happy to find this thread and the news about the Spectraview software upgrade.

We did the upgrade and did another calibration but still reddish cast.  Then tried using the SpectraView software to drive our Spyder 3 Elite calibrator and got a nice profile with no red cast.  Things now look visually neutral.

All I can imagine is our Macbeth GammaComp MD is bad.  We bought it new with the display.

NEC went ahead and replaced our sensor and the cast is gone.

Thanks NEC!
