High speed HD?
« on: October 06, 2010, 07:02:51 pm »

I'm looking for a camera or camcorder that can provide high speed video in HD.

I have used Casio's, which can record at 120 fps (which is fast enough), but the video quality is not very good.

There are specialty video cameras that can do high speed HD, but they cost over $100,000.

I thought that a compromise might be a camcorder or camera that can record 60p in HD. Could this be edited at 30 fps to reduce apparent speed by half?

Or, are there any prosumer HD camcorders or cameras that can record 120 fps.

I also need to be able to set the shutter to 1/1000th of a second.

Any suggestions appreciated.

The Phantom cameras by Vision Research are incredible.

I rent the camera when I need high speed (the camera sells for around $10,000) but some models can shoot up to 800 frames a second in full 1080 HD.

It's been used on network television and has won an Emmy award for technical achievement.

dont you mean over 100,000 for a camera?

i would love to use a phantom, but over here its over 6k per day to rent (4k usd), as panavison has a monopoly with the camera. its a bit of a rip off given the price of the camera. australia rents the camera at half of the price we pay in new zealand.

how much a day is the phantom to rent in the states?

cheers paul

Here's some footage shot on a Canon 7D at 60 fps and then slowed down using Twixtor:

Paul,

In LA the Standard Phantom rents for about $2,000, to $2,500 a day depending on days, weeks, etc.

The newest phantom with a larger format is more.

The Phantom has a 16 gig internal memory that is good for about 4.4 seconds at super slow motion, depending on file size.

If you need more time there is a 512 gig flash module  that rents for $1,500 and a breakout box for $500.

Most rentals suggest a certified Phantom Tech.

Chrysler corporation did a phantom shoot which they piggybacked on the George Washington Spot.

It obviously was an afterthought as all they did was show a car hauling ass at 1000 frames a second, which made it look like it was bog slow.

I think high speed footage is interesting and there is no cheap reliable way to produce it outside of a Phantom, but anytime I see a slow mo piece I'm usually pretty bored after the first few seconds.

There exceptions to every rule.

A Phantom as you rent it from Panavision etc. is worth more like $400,000.

The camera body alone is about $200,000, plus you have the Flash Mags which are like  $20,000 each.

The dock, the computer etc. etc.

It all costs a lot and it all adds up.
