Mobile Phones with Camera - Suggestions?
« on: October 05, 2010, 12:40:40 pm »

I am in the process of changing my mobile phone and am prone to get one of the newer camera mobiles.
It appears the Nokia N8 is going to be a killer camera for a phone, but there are other good phones outside.
In the moment I am narrowing down my research towards:

Nokia N8
HTC Desire HD
Sony Eriksson Xperia X10
Samsung Galaxy
IPhone G4

I want to do photoblogging from the phone,
telephoning and maybe some photo specific apps, like DoF calculation.
Also remote server administration with SSH,  spreadsheets,
contact management and the usual standard stuff.

In the moment it appears to me, that if I want to avoid the IPhone,
Android seems to be the second best application marketplace,
Nokia seems to have the best camera in phone (big sensor),
HTC seems to be best value for the money.

Suggestions and Ideas?

Is the N8 even available yet?  It's been delayed so often one has to wonder.

What about the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant/Captivate?

There's also Blackberry.  The new Torch is actually supposed to be a good device despite its getting trashed in the press.

I've never read anything overly good about HTC.

I just had a chance to have a look at the Samsung Galaxy this evening in a local shop.
This thing can even stitch a panorama !
The UI look squite intuitive as well - better than the HTC.
I must say this panorama function makes me crave, though the camera is 5 MP "only" -
which seems good enough for a mobile, especially when it can stitch.
And the display is superb.

The Iphone G4 I could see didn't impress me at all - I can't really understand all that hype
though the slick form factor is appealing (but not a USP).

The Android platform appears quite intriguing to me due to its open nature and a free dev kit
(at apple you pay 99$ for the dev platform I was told).

The Sony Xperia seemed not too intuitive to me, though its camera is said to be good.
I'd love to have some real camera compoarisons or test.
Maybe something for Michael (wink)?

The main reason for me is, that I often don't have my G11 with me - its still too big for day to day use / logbook function.
