Video Capabilities - Nikon D3s
« on: October 04, 2010, 04:42:48 am »

Hello :

I am an Architectural / Hotel & Resort Photographer - Wish to upgrade my camera gear from Nikon D200 to either the D700 or D3s - Of course the D3x would  be ideal, but the costings do not work for me at present.

I do not have much experience with respect to Video and my interest for this medium is peeking - For still, the D700 will work just as well for me as the D3s, the only reason to consider the D3s is the video, the 100% viewfinder and the double slot CF Crad chambers.

Noting this, how good is the video capabilities of the D3s from an IQ perspective - Yes, Its not 1080, but 720 - But how good are the results ?

I await your replies !

Thanks,

Jai

Thanks for the link - But to be honest as I do not have much exposure to dlsr video, I do not know what is considered great vs good IQ - I noted that the camera is able to shoot at ultra high iso, but how is this camera's performace compatred to others. This is what I wish to learn.

Thanks,

Jai

Well, I wanted to post a link to a very good photographer's website who worked with the Nikon with impressive results. There was a lot of informations but unfortunatly I can not find this link again, it is somewhere in all my favorite mess.
Canon leads the video dslr but to my personal taste, I prefered the render of the images I saw from this guy with the D3. Capable, the Nikon is, but then it would be good if some gurus who both know the 2 cameras (shhh...is there a texan photographer with a General Lee car around?...shhh) could speak about the use in real world for video.

I also know that Ami Vitale who works with Nikon forever has done videos. Maybe you'll find informations in her website.

Actually, a question that comes to my mind is why such a monopoly of the 5D MK2 ?

Just a quick note about the D3x -- the D3s is currently $5200, and the D3x is available refurbished for $6500.  That isn't such a huge difference for the capabilities it gives you.

What about a 5D MkII with a Nikon lens adapter?

I wrote this.

D3s

Its OK but not great, it adds, IMO web video to a fantastic stills camera, it is not a movie making tool at 720p
