Renaming paper profiles?
« on: September 30, 2010, 09:46:26 am »

I imagine renaming paper profiles to something more descriptive than SP3800_EFP_PK_2880.icc should not be an issue.   Some brands are better than others.  Are there any problems I’m not thinking of?

Thanks

You’ll need some utility that can name the internal name tag as well as just naming the file itself. On the Mac, the ColorSync utility will do this.

Anybody here know of a PC utility that will do this? It would make life simpler for me.

Free? Don’t know. But ColorThink for Windows will (and a whole lot more):

Why can't you just go to Windows Explorer, find the file containing the profiles and rename it?  As long as you keep the file extension and don't change the location this should work.  Profiles are in C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color  Shouldn't be any different than renaming any other file (unless there is something special here)

There is indeed something special here. You can change the filename until you are blue in the face, but that won't have any effect on the internal profile name, which is what shows up in profile lists in Photoshop, printer drivers, etc.

@Andrew,

Thanks for the ColorSync suggestion. I've been considering that but hadn't checked it out. From what I hear it can help with a lot of color management issues.

Eric,
You're right; I should have tested my hypothesis before posting.  I just did and while the file name reflects a change in Windows Explorer, there is no impact as to how it is listed in the color mgt control panel or LR.  Naivety led to the post.

Thanks for the heads up here.  I thought it was a silly question.

Not the best of solutions, but you can change the internal description with a Windows Hex editor. Last time I had to do this, I searched for a free hex editor download and it worked for me.  There are some caveats if you choose to go this route though. Since you will be actually hacking the profile file, save a copy of it first. Once you open up the file in the hex editor, you need to scan the contents to recognize where the internal description is. The one I used showed the ASCII text, so I just changed the characters to write my own preferred name. The restriction is that you cannot change it to a name longer than the original description since this would be overwriting other data in the file which would probably corrupt the file. You can rename it to a shorter name and fill in the rest with blank characters I guess. This is a hack, but it works if you do it right when you have no other choice.

Because there is an INTERNAL name (tag) in all ICC profiles and that’s where nearly all applications get the info to show you. Naming the file itself will not fix the OP’s problem.
