Music off the beaten path

I'd imagine there's some pretty eclectic music tastes here - let's hear your best more obscure ones to expand our horizons.

I'll start:

OK, time not allowing, just one recommendation some from this side of the Khatanga for now:

- Anouar Brahem - the astounding eyes of Rita http://www.amazon.com/The-Astounding-Eyes-Of-Rita/dp/B002QDD6F0/ref=dm_cd_album_lnk?ie=UTF8&qid=1285625779&sr=1-1

Cheers,
Bernard

Wow, The Young Gods are awesome! Thanks for the link. Will definitely be getting some of their stuff.
The singer's voice cuts right through- a very rare sound. Haunting, indeed.
Have only heard a quick sample of some the other bands you listed, but liked what I heard.

Here's some guys I've been listening to a lot lately [again]- am so glad they are BACK! However, they aren't exactly "obscure",
although they have a new album that might expand your horizons...? 8)  You will have to endure a short commercial before they play:

Sorry, feppe, have to confess to much 'lower' tastes than yours.

Anything from: the Hot Five or Seven; anything with Bessie Smith; some Humphrey Lyttleton and Chris Barber; almost everything with Chuck Berry; ten pecent of the Strolling Bones: some Diminutive Richard; a lot of Fats Domino; the Mamas and the Papas; Fleetwood Mac; a lot of swamp-pop rock from klrzfm.com; Jerry Lee Lewis; Frank Sinatra; Patsy Cline; Big Joe Turner; Ella; Nino Rota's themes for Fellini; Julie London; Freddy Fender; Lefty Frizell; Bill Doggett; The Crests (Sixteen Candles makes me go weak at the memory). Also like the Eagles and Gram Parsons, too. In a nutshell, pretty much exclusively stuff I grew up loving.

Hmmm, well ...

For samba I love Maria Rita
for Musica Popular Brasileiro (MPB)  Caetano Veloso
and  Rita Lee are my favorites

For no lyrics (for studying or programming)
Apocalyptica
Bach (especially the cello suites)
Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky (these being not off the beaten path methinks)
and Gregorian chants Voices of Tranquility

Fernando Sor is an excellent classic guitar composer

the rest is all mainstrem =)

That is excellent, thanks! British guitar bands are some of the best in the genre. Reminds me of the more mainstream The Charlatans and my favorite The Music.

This is not a competition :) Your list is not exactly off the beaten path, though :P I'm mostly a (Memphis) blues guy when it comes to music from... the years you grew up with; Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, and of course Robert Johnson. I saw B.B. King live a few years back, and he put more soul into that one performance than many modern acts put in their entire careers! And he was already in his 80s back then.

One can never go wrong with Sinatra. Topically, I have a biographical book about him with plenty of photographs, name of which escapes me. There's an absolutely stunning photo of Ava Gardner, and of course plenty of Frank.

Some names on your list that I didn't recognize, will have to check them out!

Ah…  Ava!

I had quite a few flings (mental, I was so young) with those girls: Rita Hayworth, Susan Hayward, Sandra Dee, Piper Laurie, Gina Lollobrigida, and for some longish while, Ava. Then along came BB and the rest just vanished, banished forever in the twinkling of an eye. How faithless one was with one’s loves. But I never felt jealous or envious about Frank, Artie Shaw or even the odd bullfighter. In fact, the only one I ever had several dreams about was BB.

Funny kind of loves, those.

As I write, some young guy is singing his heart out, telling me he never had the one that he wanted, never wanted the one that he had; that the one that he had was a good girl, but the one that he wanted was bad; that the grass always is greener, and that that’s just the nature of a man. Say no more, but it sounds nice in reality.

http://www.klrzfm.com

Keeps me alive most evenings if the tv is dead or nothing to do on the computer. Well, evenings in European Time. There’s a song they play quite often called ‘I can’t love you like you want me to love you’ by somebody called Jimmy Donnelly but I can’t raise him (maybe that's his problem) or the song on Youtube. But, I love it - the type of crisp background and how he hits each note separately and not just faking slides as many do. And fail with that, as well.
