Using MIDI sliders to control Lightroom
« on: September 22, 2010, 10:24:06 am »

Did a quick search of the forum and it doesn't look like this has made the rounds here yet. If you hop over to  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQXXQbRlU4I and watch the video, you'll fall out of your chair :) There's a guy that's figured out how to make his application (Paddy, which gives keyboard access to just about everything in LR) controllable using a MIDI slider control unit that is normally used for music.

When I saw the video I knew I had to get this set up. My BCF2000 arrived last night and after about an hour of head scratching I got it working. It's awesome. Sooooooooooo much better than working with the small sliders in Lightroom.

Since the documentation on how to get it all working was rather thin I wrote up the steps in more detail. You can view the setup instructions at my blog.

Enjoy!

Wow, that's amazing!  I will have to try this with the MIDI master keyboard that I have in the office...

Another simple way to do this is with a Griffin Powermate, a small USB knob type device they made to act as a volume control. It's programable, so you can map it to act in place of the up and down keys(or just about anything else). Just click on the amount field and use the knob to increase or decrease the amount. Allows for very fine adjustments. An added plus is it lets you work two handed, Powermate with one and mouse/tablet with the other.

Started using it with CS2, but they've improved the software and it plays well with LR3. There's also another outfit with an app, Controller Mate, that greatly expands mapability. I think the Powermate is now out of production, but they can be had on ebay. Griffin still supports it on their site.
