Tips for extended image edge for gallery wraps, etc
« on: September 14, 2010, 01:58:55 pm »

If you for different reasons want to extend the image edge for gallery wraps, borderless mounting or bleeding.
Without hopeless mirroring or strange pixelstretching.

The best fix:
The Content Aware Fill in CS5 makes the job. Extend the canvas-size for your purpose with white color,
select the white with the Magic Wand (low tolerance 5-7), go to Fill and pick Use>Content Aware. And there you are!
Some cleanup with the Stamp tool is sometimes necessary.

Can you post examples?  Do you lose much in image quality?

Thanks

Two corners from the same image, showing one good and one to work on. The green lines are the Guides.
And I've got the best result when I work with one side at the time.
The CAFill takes huge amount of RAM (depends on the imagesize, of course)and can give very strange effects if you fill the whole selection at once.
I was inspired by this video by Martin Evening http://www.photoshopforphotographers.com/pscs5/Movies/PSCS5%20content-aware%20fill.mov
Take a look at about 9 min inside.

Qimage can do this very well. They can do an extension of the picture or a random type fill. Really pretty neat for canvas.

I know....but some of these images is going to be printed in Germany, so the files must be fixed for printing
for a non-Qimage workflow. Or can you save out the printfile in Q?

I find the Content Aware works great for my landscape images. For images that have people or other prominent features near the edge it just does not work.
For those who just do the image on the face and a solid color on the side through photoshop.. I prefer Gen Fractals 6 mirrored but would love another option then the solid colored edges. (I hate to wrap those.)

Hi Sven,

Yes, Qimage allows to print to a file instead of a printer, this will also allow you to add your own extended border e.g. in PS. Of course the file will be relatively large (sharpened at the printer's native resolution). It does require to know the resolution of the printer that will be used, if you want the best results. Do verify whether the lab is comfortable with such large file sizes, and which printer profile they may have for you to use with Qimage.

Cheers,
Bart

Thanks Bart, for your info.
I'm on Mac (since -92) so the Qimage solution is not possible at the moment.
But I do have an old Sony Vaio with XP, so maybe I try the demoversion just to check the
extended image edge option.

ImagePrint, which I use, have the mirroring-wrap feature, but it's really ugly.

Why, Dan?  Why do you hate wrapping those?  Difficulties making the image edge fall on the corner of the wrap?

The thing if find frustrating about Genuine Fractals is the way that it lamely refuses to mirror the corner and fills it with a solid color.  It is difficult to avoid an edge of that showing.  I use an action I've had for quite a while that goes through a lot of gyrations and creates multiple images that it then pastes back together for a very seamless mirror extension that includes the corners.  Unfortunately, it sometimes fails to play well with Photoshop CS5 and requires me to reload the action again from my library, but that is a minor annoyance.  The action is several generations of PS old, but still works most of the time.  The author no longer sells or supports it.  There are some occasions when content aware fill works better, but it does get a little slow on really big images and can occasionally produce some very squirrelly artifacts.  There is not a one size fits all solution for every image.

Content Aware fill is a nice new feature of Photoshop CS5. It can be used in one of my PS Canvas Wrap actions that gives the right border selection for a colored, patterned and/or filtered edge wrap extension. The result will be a semi Gallery Wrap, the realistic image extended on the frame edges. Other Canvas Wrap actions can create a more abstract frame edge, still related in color or structure to the image without cutting off image content like with the normal Gallery Wrap. It is nice to add another way to create Canvas Wrap content but it doesn't replace flexible sizing, precision and speed of good PS actions for that job. On both PCs and MACs.
