dead pixels?
« on: September 09, 2010, 01:34:36 pm »

Hello,
it seems that my back has a line of dead pixels. this is a crop from a 200 iso photograph. You can see a line and some white points here and there... Note that this happens with captureone and camera raw 8both with the latest version). It shows up also at 50 iso, but just in the dark areas.
What do you think about it? is it fixable?
My best
Michele

Free warranty repair through your dealer (assuming you have a dealer and you are in warranty) which can be done remotely - you upload the raw - they send you a file - you connect the back and push a button and the problem is solved.

Talk to your dealer - this repair is something like $180 out of warranty (don't quote me on price - it's off the top of my head) and comes with a six month repair-warranty.

What exactly does their file do, Doug? That line is a charge trap (not "dead", just muddled), most likely caused by radiation damage. It's not fixable in the conventional sense.

Magic math developed from over a decade of experience working with CCDs. ;-)

Seriously though: I don't know the exact technicals but it involves mapping the location/type of issue and employing some fancy corrective math.

What I do know is that it works: afterwards it's hard or impossible to find any sign of the issue even when you're looking specifically for it.

I cannot accept "magic math". It must be documented somewhere?

I would think the specifics fall under proprietary and/or copyrighted information.

What back are you using?
I have an Imacon Ixpress with the same line at the same place.
Phocus or Flexcolor takes care of it.
I think it has to be there??

Oh, i forgot to mention it. I use a PhaseOne P45+. Well, actually i don't think it should be there because until july it wasn't there... Suddenly, after upgrading the firmware indeed, it showed up... And it doesn't metter wich software i use to open the raw

With Hasselblad, you have to delete a file. So the back makes a new reference file. That fixes the problem.
Maybe it works the same with Phase?

The back must be serviced at Phase One as it needs "re-calibration".
Out of warranty service is €500,- here.

I just talked with PhaseOne service. They told me what Doug said, just send a raw file and they will see if they can send me a simple file for calibrating the back or if i have to send them the back itself...
But i have to deal with my dealer. Oh, we will see :)
