Lightroom 3 and CS5 Licensing Question
« on: September 05, 2010, 12:44:58 pm »

As it sounds like those LR3 problems have been addressed with the 3.2 patch I intend to purchase LR3 and upgrade from CS3 to CS5.

I expect that both programs will allow me to load and use on 2 PCs (as I am familiar with the way CS3 permits).  What I would like to determine is can the software be loaded onto a PC that is not connected to the internet?  This would be the PC that my 12-year old uses and for which we as parents have purposely denied internet access to (for that they use an old lap-top parked on our kitchen table in a high traffic area).  Is Adobe set up to activate the software this way w/o internet access and can he software be used w/o internet access or does it need access to occasionally communicate with Adobe to check on licensing? (e.g., make sure that no more than 2 PCs are loaded with it)

Thanks

Unlike Photoshop that has activation, I don’t know there are any real, physical/software restrictions with LR. I believe you could load it on as many machines as you tired. That said, there IS an End User License Agreement (EULA) which specifies I believe two machines per license (serial number). Since most of us here are strong supporters of copyright and intellectual properly, we would honor that EULA.

Andrew,

 Hook the laptop up to the internet for installation and to activate CS5 then unplug it. Neither CS5 nor Lightroom need the internet to operate.

 Help files can be downloaded as PDFs if he needs help. If you need to do updates in CS5 then hook it up to the internet, update and unhook.

 HTH

I would of course honor intellectual copyright.

I believe this is within the "letter of the law" as far as EULA goes but I would load the software onto 3 computers:

 - My kid's PC (no internet access) and activate it;
 - My Desktop PC and activate it;
 - My laptop and not activate it with the proviso:
  - deactivate licensing on my desktop and then activate it on my laptop when I would need to use my laptop (which would only be when I was away from home extended period of time (vacation) where I would have laptop with me)

I think that is acceptable usage and meets the requirements of EULA which says something along the lines the software can only be installed on two PCs - if not I'd like to hear that from someone in the know, but I am certain you can only activate 2 PCs on-line with Adobe anyway to unlock all the utility of the software otherwise it can run, but only in a limited demo mode.

Correct?  Kosher?
