Iceland #5 - Pot of Gold at Landmannalaugar
« on: September 05, 2010, 01:47:25 am »

This was taken at one of my favourite locations in Iceland - Landmannalaugar. An active volcanic region of multi-coloured mountains. More info about this shot on my blog at http://blog.jholko.com

Beautiful.
Even without the rainbow the colors are gorgeous.
And I believe a b/w conversion would work as well.
Thanks for sharing.

Great shot. Nicely composed, & some remarkable colours in those hills

Hmmm ... on a second look I think it is a must-be-colored image.
The second rainbow would completely vanish in B/W I guess.
I must admit I overlooked it the first time.

That was one of my favorite spots in 1974, but we didn't have a rainbow to add even more color. Very nice!
As I recall, getting close to the steaming holes there was a strong sulfur ("rotten eggs") smell, and the sulfur provided much of the color.

The colors are a little too electric for me, but otherwise I like it. Is this an HDR shot?

The colours do not look natural, do they?

What could you have done with this picture in Phocus if a Hasselblad had been used?

My recollection is that being there in person the colours do not look at all natural! Landmanalaugar is a weird-looking place. I don't generally like over-saturated photos, but I felt that Josh's photo is, if anything, a little subdued compared with the reality.

Of course, maybe the colors of the mountains have faded since 1974.  ;)
Or they were built with pigments that weren't sufficiently light-fast!  ???

The two top corners appear to have vignetting. As to the colours, I come from a place where there are geysers and the colours fluctuate from a deep saturated look to muted pastels, depending on the amount of sulpher and other minerals that are present. I also observe an overall soft golden cast, an ethereal light. It appears from this image, one had many opportunities to choose a visual crop. This is a fine image indeed.
