No Downloader Pro for Mac? Now What??
« on: September 04, 2010, 03:49:08 pm »

As mentioned earlier, I'm a very low-volume hobbyist AND am extremely computer-illiterate; I don't need things to work fast, just to plod along and be understandable -- THAT'S why I've enjoyed Breezesystem's "Downloader" so much for 10 years.

However, a new Mac is on its way, and I see that my trusty tool is Windows-only.  Now what?  I shoot with a Canon 40D, and there must be software to offload files to my compter, but I'm anxious about having to learn something new/different.  Please tell me not to worry, that Canon makes it just as easy as "Downloader" (or that there's other, reasonably-priced programs available).

I appreciate your sharing some insights . . .

What are you doing with the photos? How do you manage your archive?

Your new Mac has a photo management app called iPhoto which will automatically launch when you insert a card into a card reader (or hook a camera up via USB.) iPhoto can do a fair amount, though IMHO it's been dumbed down over the last few years. But it will handle raw files, and help organize your photos.

If you manage your own photos manually, you can just drag and drop the files from the card into a folder on your hard drive. That won't help with renaming and other metadata, though.

Thanks for the response.  As far as my image-management goes, I just download to my hard drive, process in C1, then on to PS3 (soon-to-be 5) for editing.  "Keepers" go to an external drive, and on to another for backup.

Again, very low volume -- maybe 300 shot a YEAR, so I'm not looking to shave seconds off the process -- just hate the thought of having to abandon, or at least modify, a process that's  become familiar and comfortable.

Sounds as if the iPhoto app will work fine -- and doesn't Canon provide a system for offloading from a card reader or camera?(obviously, I can't seem to find all my 40D support materials -- oops)

Thanks again!

I've never used Breezesystems Downloader so not sure exactly what it includes, but I've always relied on Image Ingester Pro to import images on a Mac. It can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be, includes thumbnail previews, verifies every import and can import to more than just one directory at once. It requires a bit of initial effort to setup your preferences and base import settings, but after that can be quick and super reliable to use.

Wait, doesn't Capture 1 do this already? Just create a new Session, and then click the Import button and C-1 should open a window that shows what's on your card, and let you download it.

Thanks a million for taking the time to walk me through this.  I have an earlier version (3.7, I think) of C1, but will go ahead and see if the download-to-computer feature is really there.  If not, the Image Ingester seems like a good bet, and it's about the same cost as Downloader Pro, so worth a try.  Appreciate your efforts here!
