I drove up there from Boston yesterday morning. Unfortunately the lupins aren't in full bloom as of yet. A woman working in the information booth said that the amount of cold weather & clouds has pushed everything back by about a week. She said that next weekend things should be looking good.
Overall though, I was a bit dissappointed with fields. I was imagining large fields of flowers with the mountains as a backdrop. Unfortunately, that was rarely the case. I followed the map in the Festival Guide Book and drove to about 90% of the fields. I say 90% because we drove down some dirt roads where there should have been fields but saw only woods.
The field at the end of TimberLane was nice, but not in full bloom. I snapped this picture:
The field is really a dead-end with houses on a couple of the sides.
The field at Sunset Hill was also nice, but again, not in full bloom.
No butterflies, but I did manage to get a macro of a ladybug.
The small black dot inside this dandelion is actually a tick, so be sure to bring plenty of bug/tick repellant and look for ticks when you get home.
Overall, it was a fun ride up & back, but not as glorious as I was hoping. The cloudcover added to that. Unfortunately, I was expecting something like the vast fields that you see full of flowers on the NY Thruway, in between Syracuse & Buffalo. Hundreds of acres of wild flowers... Unfortunately, I'm always driving to Michigan and never have time to stop.
