which lens?

The real question to ask (yourself) is whether you primarily intend to shoot wide angle or telephoto. When you answer that, you'll know which lens to buy. Both lens are highly regarded. Don't forget to factor in the 1.6x FOV factor for the 10D.

I own a 10D and an EF50mm 1.8 lens. Can afford to buy only 1 lens and can't decide which to get first.  a 17-40L f4 or a 70-200L f4.

if you go for the 70-200 see about the f2.8 version.  The non-is lens is reasonable in price now and gives outstanding results.  That is one of my favorite lenses aside from my 300f2.8
