Transferring picture files.

Imagine this if you will: I am outside on a field trip and a person with me wants to give me some of their digital images to take back to my studio. They might have the images on a memory card or a USB drive.
Now I don't want to lug a laptop around on these trips, but is there a gadget that is pretty lite and small that could do the job - something I could load the other person's images on to and then take them off when I get home?
Thanks for any replies.

Yes, such devices do exist: they contain a small hard drive and a card reader, and are commonly used to do on-the-field backups.
Look for "photobank", "portable hard disk", and similar terms.
