Sony NEX VG10 HD Camcorder review -- actual frame rate
« on: August 21, 2010, 06:33:29 pm »

Thanks for the FANTASTIC review Mike!

This Sony AVCHD 1080/60i marketing mess is very confusing -- very thankful you took the time & effort to get to the bottom of things!

I've been looking to buy a little Sony camcorder http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/707153-REG/Sony_HXR_MC50U_HXR_MC50U_Ultra_Compact_Pro.html for a while now and no matter who I ask, they all say its shooting two 30i interlaced frames (1080/60i).  So these Sony's are actually shooting 30p and wrapping them 60i then???

I have a shout out to B&H, linking to your article -- we'll see what they have to say.

UPDATE:
B&H got back with me this morning the Sony HXR MC50U is shooting:
Video Resolution : 1920 x 1080 captured @ 30p (29.97p), recorded in AVCHD 60i (59.95i)

Thanks,
Chris (confused stills guy) :-\

I can't say for sure that this is the case with the MC50, but it definitely is with the VG10 and some other models, according to their top marketing people.

But, you're right. It's a communications mess, and I'm sure Sony looses lots of sales because of it.

You'd assume (never assume I know) that all the stuff Sony listed as pro-sumer would be this way.............

I did get a recommendation (for journalism & documentary work) on this Sony http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/672423-REG/Sony_HXR_NX5U.html -- I'd love to hear what you & Chris think here.  Enjoying the video reviews BTW, the future is here, embrace it or fade away as they say!
