Telephoto greater than 300mm?
« on: August 21, 2010, 06:56:35 am »

I'm using a 645DF with a 300mm 4.5 AF APO from Mamiya but I want to know if I can get a longer lens say 500 or 600 AF OR is there a converter which will fit the 300 (but loses the APO)???
If there is a converter, which model number fits? Any help much appreciated.

Peter,
I have the 300 f/ 2.8 which by itself is excellent, but when the Mamiya 2X converter is added to the mix, the results are quite disappointing. I have shot with the mirror up and found modest image improvement but the combination still falls short of expectations and, for my purposes at least, mirror up is simply not an option. The better way to go might be to seek out a 500 APO. Having used this lens with film, I can tell you that this is easily the equal of the 300, i.e., very, very good. While I have no experience to offer with this one in digital formats, I can not imagine that you would be disappointed.

Nice speaking with you on the phone today. I hope you'll keep us in mind in the future.

Off the top of my head I was wrong. The RZ only has a 1.4x teleconvertor the 645 has a 2.0x teleconvertor.

Hasselblad has several solutions. a 500/8 the 250 and 350 Sonnars and also Superachromats (latter, expensive) There is also a 2x Mutar

I actually have all these lenses and they work fine on the Contax 645 with adapter and should work on the Phase just fine.

If you value optical quality above all else, the Takahashi "Q" is is the best fast 500-600mm (in this case 530mm f/5) production medium format lens of all time:
http://www.astronomieplus.com/modules.php?name=ProductList&op=BrowseItem&ItemID=1616

Here's the manual for the previous iteration, the "ED" version, since the accessory system for the "Q" and "ED" are mostly the same :
http://www.takahashiamerica.com/manuals/FSQ-106ED.pdf

Note the Mamiya 645 and Pentax 67 adapters on pp 20 and 25.

Non plus ultra. Thing is, it's designed to be shot wide open (diffraction limited to a ridiculously small fraction of a wavelength at full aperture). If you want to shoot at smaller than f/5, you need to rig your own aperture masks to cover the front. I could live with that  :) ; indeed, I've done so for shooting through lesser refractors.
