Moving LR3 to new drive: Question
« on: August 18, 2010, 03:27:58 pm »

I'm planning to move my LR catalog and associated files and all my photos to a new and bigger drive, but want to be sure I don't lose anything along the way. So I've copied everything to the new drive (using Chronosync to mirror the folder on the new drive from the folder on the old one) and redirected LR to the new catalog location (by holding down Alt key at startup)
LR has found the new catalog location, but is still referencing the photo files from the old drive (if I go Ctrl> Show in Finder that's where it goes)

Don't want to erase the old drive until LR's working fully from the new drive. How can I get it to reference the "new" photo location?

Thanks in advance - any suggestions welcome

There might be an easier/official way, but this is how I did it:

(0. Close LR)
1. rename old photo folder to oldphotos or pretty much anything
2. Open LR. It won't find your photos and has exclamation marks next to them
3. Click the exclamation mark or right-click (can't remember) on one of the folders, there is an option to locate the files
4. Locate the new folder

LR should find most, if not all of your photos with just one click. It will certainly find all photos in each folder by just locating one photo. Depending on how complex your folder structure is you might need to do 3. and 4. a few times.

Also, double-check that your color labels are correct, I've had problems migrating them with earlier versions.

Well, I finally finished. It took a long time (several hours) to sort out all the missing images (several hundred in total, scattered about my folders), but I think I've got it all sorted now.

Thanks for your help, feppe!!
