THM stands for Thumbnail. It is indeed a very low resolution image to be displayed by your camera.

I am told that the little "THM" files that are generated with the RAW files of the Canon cameras (and others?) are used by the camera's own LCD display.  That's great, but do they serve any other purpose?  They don't open in Photoshop, and when I open them in iPhoto they go super-pixelly once bigger than a postage stamp.  I just delete them, but can the camera be set to not export them with the RAW file in the first place?

I asked this question a while back on the Phase 1 forum.  If I remember correctly the answer I got was to keep them because there was a plan for C1 to use them in a future version.

I don't bother keeping the THMs. The Adobe Raw converter can process the CRWs by themselves just fine, and the browser shows all of the shooting data I care about, like ISO, shutter speed, aperture, lens used, and focal length setting of the lens if it is a zoom. The only change I have anyu interest in applying to the RAWs is a batch rename to chronologically order files shot with multiple cameras and give them all the same naming convention. This works fine for me, your mileage may vary.
