Color Appearance Models - any commercial use ?
« on: August 17, 2010, 01:07:48 pm »

Just cleaning up a bit with my archival files on Digital Imaging,
I found some articles on Color Appearance Models which once seemed to me quite interesting:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIECAM02

Mark Fairchild
http://www.cis.rit.edu/user/21
http://www.cis.rit.edu/fairchild/PDFs/AppearanceLec.pdf

A Survey of Color for Computer Graphics
http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.90.8009&rep=rep1&type=pdf

So, what happened to it ?
Are there any real-world applications making use of such models i.e. for image processing ?

Peter

I like this PS plug-in, it's very helpful:
http://sites.google.com/site/clifframes/ciecam02plugin

The CIECAM02 TRC's for average, dim and dark surround can be used in basICColor/Spectraview 4 display profiler, as target calibration TRC.

It's also used in Windows WCS CMM, ProfileMaker, Argyll CMS, and - I strongly suspect - in Photoshop.

Hi
CIECAM02 is used for gamut mapping as it has  colour space(s) that are more perceptually uniform than CIELAB.
mainly in rendering algorithms

Windows CMS uses CIECAM02 but how its implemented im not sure.

But colour appearance models have been used for a long time.

I used a CIECAM02  colour space to minimize camera matrix errors so that I now can render images from scene appearance as opposed to just scene colorimerty as is done at present.

Here are some early examples. Note this project is is still work in progress.

Software for building profiles (e.g., X-Rite's ProfileMaker) sometimes use CIECAM02.
