RZ67 Handheld question ?!
« on: August 11, 2010, 07:09:18 pm »

Hi,

I am using a RZ and I wanted to ask other RZ users how do you use it handheld ?

I am still searching for the best way to get most of my RZ when shooting handheld in the studio or outdoor.

Do you have any tips ?

Thanks,

R.

Hello,

When I use my Mamiya RZ hand held I combine it with the motor winder and the L-Grip.

Also I some times use a mono pod to reduce the weight.

Cheers

Hi Simon

I have the same combination with you too

Just wondering how do you mount a portable (eg:nikon sb900) on the rz with grip?

Thanks

Hello,

I never have tried to mount a flash on the RZ grip.
I always us Bowens flash or Metz 45’s.

Cheers

I usually use it hand held with the L grip, winder and finder. I'm surprised that shake isn't too bad. I put a Pocket Wizard on the Lgrip and I need a little flash extension cable.

I'm surprised that I get pretty good results even at lower shutter speeds. The grip really helps to hold the camera.

I do mostly use the RZ on a tripod but I find it quite comfortable to use all by itself handheld, support most of the weight in your left hand and use that to focus take a shot then roll the body slightly in your left hand while cranking the advance lever with your right hand. I use the WLF too as its a good size to see what your composing and for focus, it also puts the camera at your waist and holding with two hands reduces a lot of camera shake.

Definitely can't recommend the left hand grip enough. It totally frees up any niggles you have with supporting all that weight whilst trying to shoot, focus and crank the winder. I've found that since getting it that i use the winder less handheld as it's just a little too heavy to work comfortably.
I think i paid about £40 for mine from ebay but they pop up now and again at KEH too.

I have a grip that is normally made for the 645 but it fits the RZ.

I will get a L Grip and see if there is a big difference.

Thanks for the input ;)

I have the L grip, but never use it. handheld I prefer to use the RZ only with the winder, fits best in my way of shooting (and I shoot most of the time handheld)

Does the L-grip help with handholding at low shutter speeds? I find 1/125 too slow for being consistently free from motion blur. This is just with the camera, no winder. But I like it this way. I would only consider the L grip if it helped considerably.
