New Photoshop retouching book - is it any good?
« on: July 18, 2010, 07:41:43 am »

I've just seen Photoshop CS5 Restoration and Retouching for Digital Photographers Only by Mark Fitzgerald advertised on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/product...239&s=books

and wondered if any of you had read it.

I was waiting to see if Katrin Eismann was bringing out an updated edition of 'Photoshop Restoration and Retouching' ( to cover CS5's new features ) but thought that this looked interesting.

Any opinions / advice gratefully received.

Regards

I have Ctein's book on restoration which I thought was quite good.  He's coming out with a second edition....

Yes, I also have Ctein's book - as well as Katrin's and both are very good. Most of the material in both books remains indefinitely useful. Some new tools in PSCS5 would make a few of them easier to implement. Usually, what I look forward to most when authors up-date such books is new applications of existing tools which they have developed between up-dates.

Tim, Mark

Thanks for the replies.

I remember Michael recommending the first edition of  Ctein's book when it was published. The second edition sounds good but I'm probably more interested in retouching than restoration which seems to be the main theme of the book.

I've seen excerpts from Katrin Eismann's book and it looks like what I need, but maybe I'll try and pick up a  ( cheap ) copy of the first ed of Ctein's book.

If I end up getting Mark Fitzgeralds book I'll let you know what I think of it.

Hi Graeme,

I've asked Katrin about an updated version when I met her in the Netherlands early last year. At that time she still had to start working on an update. I know a lot can happen in a year, but it would surprise me if she has it already finished, with CS5 included no less.

However, as said by Mark, things can only get easier with CS5, but the essentials of earlier versions stay the same, so the current edition will be very usefull anyway.

Cheers,
Bart
