Photoshop MF lens profiles
« on: July 15, 2010, 01:40:19 pm »

Has anyone had any experience of producing, or know of, lens profiles for Hasselblad HC wide angle lenses using PS CS5?   I haven't upgraded yet but as a Phase One /H1 user a profile for the 35mm would be useful. I guess the profiles are specific to the overall sensor dimensions.

Process your images in Capture One. There are lens corrections for the HC35mm specifically to your digital back which will (nearly entirely) remove distortion, and run chromatic aberration and purple fringing removal based on the specific tendencies/weaknesses of that lens. You can also add progressive-to-edge sharpening for fall-off in sharpness. All prior to the raw being processed. You can also copy and apply that correction to a thousand raws in a matter of seconds.

That way your image enters CS5 already corrected. Infinitely faster, and significantly higher quality.

Doug,

Thanks for that. I do use Capture One and know about the lens corrections. You say "nearly entirely". The presets for the HC lenses seem (as they always have) to have all been produced with a P45 at f11. I use a P25+, will all the corrections be appropriate and correct? At other apertures? Assuming what focused distance? Are the Capture One profiles built for the specific distortion patterns from the HC lenses or by applying some generic distortion correction?

In any case its the distortion correction potential in a Photoshop profile that I am specifically interested in comparing with Capture One.  I'm not an architectural photographer but I do get commissioned to shoot some exteriors.

I'd be interested to hear what you find. From my readings, it appears the DAC in Phocus is the best way to go to correct distortion, vignetting, and other issues. But since you are using a Phase back, i guess that's not possible.  I too just picked the HC35 as my goto lens for weddings. So we'll see how it works out.

generic. Whilst C1's lens corrections all in all are really good the distortion correction is very rudimentary and only corrects linear distortion (not complex distortions). Too, the distortion correction softens the images noticeably. But the same goes for the Photoshop filter... IMO.
If am not mistaken Nurizon "Acolens" has the same engine as Alpas Lens Corrector (or better: Alpas software has the same as Acolens ...). The quality is outstanding.

Thanks tho-mas, that's very useful to know. My German is poor and the English version of the site isn't ready yet. Are there pre-built HC profiles for the software or would I have to create them myself?

there are no pre-built profiles for HC lenses.
So you have to buy the reference chart to create them by yourself.
You will need the Pro version of the software plus the chart. The kit is ~ €900,- here.
Amongst others Calumet is a dealer of Acolens in Germany. So I think it should be possible to order it from Calumet.
Too... Calumet creates profiles (resp. you can make them at Calumet with your gear). Maybe it's possible to buy profiles already created for other photographers (you are certainly not the first HC user...). But I don't know how they handle this.

Unless it is are so subtle I can't see it, or have misunderstood how it is used, there doesn't appear to be any distortion correction in the Hasselblad HC 35mm presets in Capture One (I assume its the same for other HC lenses), only light fall off, sharpness fall off and CA presets along with the usual facility to apply generic distortion correction.
