You just have to love the photo captions in the new article by Bernard Languillier.  What a hoot.

I thought they were all fine except the one that said "Shot with a camera." I had a hard time wading through all the technical info in that caption.

P.S. Excellent article, Bernard!

Great article indeed!

I'll however disagree on a slight detail point : a true sensible and contemplative mountaineer would not make the same choices as quoted in Bernard's article when it comes to carrying a grand piano, and will much more likely carry a harpsichord, first because it's lighter than a grand piano and second and mostly because Bach wrote many more fugues for it than he wrote for the piano(forte) (and an organ may be a bit too delicate an instrument to bring with, not to mention the wind drag on a stormy ridge).

Absolutely right about harpsichord vs. piano!

And if you want one custom designed and built for backpacking at high elevations, you should talk to my brother Rodney. He has now built not one but two harpsichords custom fitted to available space in his sailboat so that his wife Barbara can play Bach, Scarlatti. etc., for him while they are on their summer cruise off the coast of Maine. The weather conditions encountered on the ocean suggest that building a harpsichord for mountaineering should be no more difficult.

You can see photos of two of his instruments (but not, alas, the nautical ones) here.

In addition to the great captions, thanks to Bernard for the reference to the late Peter Gowland's website (with respect to the handy P&S 8x10).
Since last tracking down some part for an old Gowland Pocket View camera, I'd forgotten about that website -- now enriched with more images
and stories. There's a lot of photographic history from the mid-20th century on the site.

Thank you gentlement for these encouraging words.

It might perhaps have been more efficient to skip the article altogether and just publish the captions.

Cheers,
Bernard

No! I loved the captions, but the article was fascinating and informative, too. I've often wondered how you go about staying comfortable and safe on your spectacular winter treks.

Cheers,

Eric
