subject to any IS or VR you may have, use 1/effective fl as the guideline.

Tim Gray has provided the consensus of numeous previous discussions. The other common idea is that you should test your own hand steadiness for yourself, since digital makes it so easy to take a sequence of shots of something with fine detail like printed text at a sequence of shutter speeds, and see at what speed the sharpness breaks down.

That way, you might come up with a rule like "twice focal length" that works directly for your hands and your camera, and not have to fiddle with conversions to "35mm equivalent focal lengths".

I have just ordered a dslr, and was curious how the focal length magnification factor effects the 1/focal length rule of thumb.  Do I use the focal length of the lense or the focal length multiplied by the magnification factor of the camera?

Thanks in advance,

I will have to try the shutter speed tests when the camera gets here.  Thanks for the suggestion.
